Ace: Week Nine, Day Three

Awesome-ness: Ace jogged around town for an hour and got a small reward.

Holly Black woke up early the next morning and started preparing the family some waffles.  It was important in times like this to be together, she thought.

"Ace! Kids! Time for breakfast!" she called up the stairs.

"Sorry, Mom, no time. I'm taking the kids in early. We have a field trip today," Bethany said, ushering the boys out the door.

Holly stood at the bottom of the stairs and called out, "Ace?"

"Sorry Hol," he said as he jogged downstairs.  "I need to go for a run."  Dad always said the best way to blow off a little steam was to go exercise, he thought.

Holly watched as Ace jogged out the door and felt deflated.  Nobody needed her...

As he circled around Town Park, Ace saw that the summer festival had been set up.  Hm, he thought to himself.  Maybe the kids would like to go this afternoon...

"Why are we here?" Chase asked, looking around the house.

"Can't I go over to Topher's?" Bethany begged.

Ace waved his hands for silence.  "I thought it would be good for us all to get out of the house and have some fun!"  Ace glanced down at his watch.  "I have about an hour before I need to go..."

Devon looked around, "Where's Grandma?"

Ace sighed. "I couldn't get her to come out.  She's feeling pretty bad right now."  Then, looking at Bethany he asked, "When I head off to work, I'd like you to stay and watch the boys.  Make sure they have a good time."  He handed her $50.

"Now!" he said, clapping his hands together. "Let's go have some fun!"

Chase immediately headed over to the chess board and began playing.

While Bethany and Devon headed over to the skating rink.  She twirled with him in circles until she felt her phone vibrating in her pocket.

"Hold on, Devon," she told her nephew.  "I'll be right back."
Bethany stepped out of the rink and flipped open her phone.  "Hello?" she asked.

It was Topher on the line.  "Hey, Bethany," he said.  "I kinda wanted to talk to you about Prom," he said.  "Do you think you could come over?"

"I'll be right over"! she gushed. Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God!  Bethany thought.  He's going to ask me to Prom!

She didn't even think about the boys...

Devon hadn't even really noticed when Bethany left to answer her phone.  He kept on skating and having fun.  But then, he noticed that he was alone..

Where was everyone?

Jumping out of the rink, he ran to find Chase.

"Chase! Bethany's gone and I don't know where she went! What do we do?" Devon asked worriedly.  "It's getting dark!"

Chase looked around the park and frowned.  "Remember what the officer said today at the field trip... if you're ever lost, find a police officer!"

Devon reached out and grabbed his brother's hand.  "Come on, let's go to the police station!"

The boys waited anxiously as the police officer called their Dad.  They just hoped they were able to get through to him...

Ace was outside the theater chatting with Becky Baker.  "How did I not know that you were interested in music?" he'd asked with surprise when he'd found out she was his co-worker.

Becky had shrugged.  "We didn't really talk about that, I guess."

Ace winced.  Ouch, he thought.  Apparently their date hadn't made a lasting impression on her at all.

Just then, his phone started ringing.  He excused himself and flipped the phone open.  Becky watched as Ace's mouth dropped open and he sprinted away.

She shrugged as she patted her hair.  She wondered if that yummy Pablo Martinez was going to be able to sneak away from his wife again tonight to meet her here...

Ace raced over to the police station with his stomach in a knot.  He saw his boys waiting outside with an officer.  He pulled them into his arms and hugged them tightly.

"Are you guys okay?" he asked, running his hand over their faces, as though to ascertain they were fine.

Chase and Devon nodded.  "We were scared," Devon piped up.

"Where's Bethany?" Ace demanded.

Bethany was in heaven!
Topher had asked her to Prom and then confessed that he had feelings for her.  They'd spent the evening making out while his Mom was at work.

When his mom stumbled in, lip-locked with some guy, Topher had quietly suggested that it was probably best if she headed home.  It killed her to have to leave him, but she knew how sensitive he was about his mom.

She hurried home and ran straight into Ace...

"Where the hell were you?" Ace yelled.  "I spent an hour searching the park for you... after I picked the boys up from the POLICE STATION!"

Oh God, the boys! Bethany cringed.  "I'm so sorry Ace, but Topher called and..."

"You left my boys alone at the park because Topher called you?" Ace demanded.  "Of all the irresponsible..." he trailed off, too upset to speak.  Lips thinned, he added, "You know you're grounded."

"You can't do that!" Bethany screeched.  "You're not my father!" Then, bursting into tears, she ran to her room and slammed the door.

Ace winced as Bethany stormed off.  What was he going to do? he thought helplessly.

Holly heard the door slamming, but couldn't move from her bed.  Sometimes just laying here in the bed she'd shared with Jesse for so long made her feel as though he was still with her...

  1. Aww poor Holly. You are needed hun.

Bad Bethany! Bad! Although I can understand...but still..Bad!

    Oh Jesse </3

  2. Uh oh! Of all the places to go, the boys run to a police station! LOL, no wonder poor Ace was freaked out. ... though shouldn't he know better than to keep mucking around with that floozy Becky? :P
