Eva: Week Twenty-One, Day One

Perfectionist To-Do List:  Attend Funeral,  Plan birthday party?

Nathaniel was worried about Eva.  She'd taken her mother's death pretty hard.  "Are you okay, babe?" he asked, reaching across the table and squeezing her hand.
"I'm okay," she said with a small smile.  "I'm just not looking forward to today..."

 ***

Nathaniel glanced towards Eva as she stared absently out the car window.  "We don't have to go, you know?  Just say the word."

Eva turned to face him, rubbing his shoulder.  "No, I'm okay. I need to do this."

 ***

Eva stopped and took a deep breath for fortitude.  She willed her feet to move towards the gathering, but her feet seemed stuck to the ground.  She felt like a fraud attending Yvonne's funeral...
...especially in the face of other's grieving.
"Eva! You came!" Greyson said, pulling his older sister into his arms for a hug.  "I'm glad you made it," he confessed.   Greyson was just a baby when Yvonne left, so he hadn't been subject to their mother's mercurial moods.
"Eva," Farrah said, whirling around with tears in her eyes.   Eva braced herself.
"Farrah, you promised there would be no drama," her fiance, Mayor Seth Davies, said, reaching out to put his arm around Eva's waist.  "We're in public," he said in low-tone, ever mindful of appearances.
Farrah jerked out of Seth's hold and jabbed her finger at her sister.  "What are you even doing here?" she snapped.  "You didn't even care!"

"She was still my mother!" Eva said, offended.
"Farrah! Please!" Greyson began, trying to step in between the sisters.
Seth pasted on a smile and chuckled as if he didn't have a care in the world.  "Ladies," he said quietly, "People are watching..."

Intervention didn't seem like it would be successful as the sisters seemed to be on the verge of a throw-down.

...And then... just like that... it was over...
"Farrah, stop it," a young man said lightly, stepping forward and reaching out for Eva's hand.  "I'm Bryan Gibbons... your half-brother.""
Eva stared at the young man - the spitting image of Felix.  She knew that her mother and Felix had a child, but she'd always envisioned him as a child still... if she thought of him at all...
Farrah made a sound of disgust and turned around, facing the newly dug grave.

Eva felt speechless.  "I..." she trailed off, trying to rally her thoughts, "It's nice to meet you finally," she told him.
Eva stepped over and stood next to Farrah, staring at her mother's grave.
"I'm so sorry," Eva said quietly to her sister before taking her leave.

 ***

Back at home, Nathaniel grabbed Eva's hands.  "Go get changed," he said.  "I have an idea!"

 ***

"Where are we going?" Eva asked, rocking Ian in her arms.

Nathaniel grinned cockily.  "I thought we could all use a change of scenery!"
Eva followed after him.

***

Eva felt her tension and sadness melting away.  It was hard to stay melancholy in the sunshine out in the fresh park air.  She smiled as she watched her husband playing around with Haley.    They settled down for a family picnic.
After eating, Nathaniel was trying to teach Haley to talk.  Eva sank down to the grass with him, smiling as her little boy rolled over and tried to get in a kneeling position to crawl.  "Look Nathaniel! Ian's about to crawl!"
As night fell, they'd watched as Ian began crawling and chasing after Haley.  "You're such a big boy!" Eva said, hoisting Ian in the air.
Nathaniel was so thankful to see the smile on Eva's face again.
He pulled her into his arms for a kiss.

"My mommy!" Haley said, glaring at her younger brother, Ian, and wrapping her arms around her Mommy's legs.

  1. It's sad that Farrah can't forget about hating Eva even during their mother's funeral. It's also interesting to see Bryan, he seems really nice so far. Is Felix still alive?

    1. Very, but in Farrah's defense, she kind of felt like she was the only one to stay by her mom's side through it all. I could see her being offended that Eva came to the funeral when she'd never given her mom the time of day before. Sad, sad family dynamics!

Yeah, I'd wanted to show off Bryan before, but never really had the opportunity. Maybe he was at boarding school. :) Felix has been gone for awhile now. He passed away shortly after he signed the contract with Nathaniel!

    1. Thankfully Bryan stepped in and calmed everyone down! Eva & Farrah do not like each other one bit! Must be all those rude greets. :)
