Eva: Week Twenty-One, Day Five

Perfectionist To-Do List: Cancel fundraiser, Cancel campaign, Cancel everything...

"Eva?" Nathaniel asked, startled to find Eva sitting in the dark.
He flicked the nearby lamp on.  "You're not dressed!" He checked his watch.  "The campaign fundraiser is set to begin..."

Eva squeezed her eyes shut and shook her head.
This isn't like Eva at all, Nathaniel thought worriedly.  He came around the chair and gently pulled her up.  "What is it, babe? What's wrong?"
"I can't do it, Nate! I just can't!" she sobbed, throwing herself into his arms.  "I just feel so lost..." she trailed off.   Eva had been set to announce her intention to run against Penelope for Mayor.  Seth had won the Governor position by a landslide and had moved to Bridgeport with her sister, Farrah, and half-brother, Bryan.  She'd last seen Farrah at their father's funeral...

Fresh tears started to well up in her eyes when she thought about her Dad...
Nathaniel wrapped his arms around his wife and softly rubbed her back.  "It's okay.  You don't have to do anything you don't want to do.  Maybe running in the next election would be better timing." He craned his head back to look at her.  "Is that what you want?"

Eva nodded her head against his shoulder.

"Do you want me to make the calls?" he asked.

She nodded again.

"I'll take care of it, babe," he promised.  "And I think it's time to get away for a bit..."

"Where are we going?" Haley piped up from the backseat.

"Daddy's planned a wonderful weekend!" Eva said as she glanced back at Haley.  "Are you excited?"
Nathaniel drove through the town, stopping at the grocery store.

"Nathaniel? Where are you going?" Eva asked when he hopped out of the car.

Nathaniel leaned back in and smiled, "I want to pick something up real quick," he said.  "Be right back!"
When they finally stopped, Haley looked around.  There wasn't anything around!  "This is it?" she asked indignantly.  "There's nothing here!"

Nathaniel laughed at the expression on her face.  "Come on, you're it!" he said as he tagged her shoulder.

"You're on!" Haley cried out, chasing after him.
"Be careful!" Eva called out as she trailed behind them.
 Finally they reached Crystal Springs.
Haley looked around in amazement.  "It's beautiful!" she whispered, completely in awe.
"I thought you'd like it," Nathaniel said as he helped Haley set up her fishing line.

Haley's mouth dropped when her dad plopped the rod in her hands.  "But! I've never fished before!" she sputtered.

Nathaniel grinned. "You just hold it steady until a fish bites!"
Eva's heartache eased a little every moment of that perfect, lazy, afternoon.

"Are you sure you remember how to light a fire?" Haley asked skeptically as Nathaniel tried to light the fire for the third time that night.

"Of course!" Nathaniel grumbled under his breath.  "It must be the kindling..."
Finally the fire cooperated and Eva showed Haley how to cook her fish.
"Maybe you should've shown Daddy," she suggested.
Eva glanced over and smothered a grin when she saw Nathaniel frantically blowing on his fish that had caught fire.  "Don't hold it in the fire, sweetie," she teased.

"Alright, now it's time for the main event," Nathaniel said, leading the family to the lake, away from the tent.
"What is it Daddy?" Haley asked.

"Just wait..."
He set down the firecracker and leaned down to light.  "Everyone stay back!"
The firecracker shot up straight in the sky with a loud whistling noise...
...and then exploded into sparks of brilliant colors.

"And there's more where that comes from!" Nathaniel said excitedly.

"That was awesome Daddy!" Haley said. "Light some more!"
"No more left," Nathaniel said with some regret. He'd always loved shooting off firecrackers.  "Why don't you take Ian and get settled in the tent.  We'll follow you in a minute..."
Nathaniel and Eva watched the kids ambling away.

"They probably want to kiss!" Haley told her brother loudly.
Eva turned to Nathaniel and walked into his arms.  "Thank you so much.  This was exactly what I needed."

  1. Wow, when Eva says she needs a break, she must really need a break.

It's nice to see the whole family together, since Eva and Nathaniel are usually so busy.

    1. I just saw Eva being completely devastated by Chase's funeral, but I didn't have it in me to give the family another funeral after Yvonne's just a few posts ago. So, I thought that Eva & Nathaniel being outdoorsy-lovers might like to get away for awhile - commune with nature and heal their hearts. :)

And I loved that Haley & Ian were able to get time some quality time with their parents! Maybe Haley & Ian will grow to love Crystal Springs as much as their parents!
