Eva: Week Twenty-Three, Day One

Perfectionist To-Do List:  Clear the Calendar!  Surprise Vacation!

"Haley, wake up," Nathaniel said after heading into her room.  "It's time to get going."

Haley groaned and put the pillow over her head.  "Daaaaad, it's not even light outside yet!"

"Come on, be downstairs in fifteen minutes," he told her.  "Or I'll come back up with a glass of water," he teased.
"Up and at 'em!" Nathaniel said, gently waking Ian up.  "It's time to get going!"
Ian sat up groggily, nodding his agreement with his eyes still closed.

"I'm up, I'm up," he said sleepily.
 ***

"Everyone ready to go?" Eva asked as she buckled up.
"Where are we going anyway?" Ian asked.

"It's a surprise!" Nathaniel announced happily.  "But we're going to have a blast!"

***

"Oh, I remember this place!" Haley said, remembering the time they visited before.

Ian glanced around. "I don't!"

"That's because you were a little baby the last time we came," she told him, triumphantly.

"Come on, kids. Let's go catch up with Dad!" Eva said, breaking into a jog.

***

"Mom, it's beautiful!" Haley said, glancing at the Crystal Springs park.
"What's that sign say?" Ian asked, pointing to the sign on the flag pole.

Ian walked over with Ian and slung his arm around his son's shoulder.  "That is a plaque commemorating the fact that this park has been officially recognized as a protected state park.  Your mother fought long and hard to have it kept from being turned into a neighborhood development!"

"Wow!" Ian said, his voice full of wonder.  "This place looks awesome!"

"Come on, let's go fishing," Nathaniel said, tugging Ian over towards the water's edge.

***

"Are you sure you don't want to join us?" Eva called out to Haley.

Haley glanced up from her tablet briefly and made a face. "Uh, no, I'm good!" she said.
"I caught one, Mom! I caught one!" Ian suddenly called out.

Eva looked over and smiled at the little minnow her son held.
"It's not very big, is it?" Ian said unhappily, putting the small fish in the cooler.

 ***

After enjoying a picnic lunch, the family decided to go for a hike.

"I think they enjoy it just as much as we do!" Nathaniel said, pleased to share one of his favorite places with his kids.

Eva chuckled, "I don't think poor Haley is as into the outdoors as we are!  But Ian is in his element! Did you notice he doesn't even mind how cold it is today!"
Haley fell behind on the hike.  "Is it almost time to go back?" she whined.  "My feet are hurting!"  The next time her parents suggested a surprise vacation, she was going to ask to go stay at Rachel's house!  Fishing... ew!  Hiking... yuck!  What other horrors could they inflict on her?!
"Hey, Dad! Come look at this cool snake!" Ian called out excitedly.

"SNAKE?!" Haley shrieked.

Eva glanced over with concern.  "Ian, don't..."

"Ouch! It bit me!" Ian shouted indignantly, waving his hand around in pain as the snake slithered away.

 ***
After Nathaniel chased down the snake to confirm that it was a non-venomous variety, they headed back to camp.  Eva cleaned and bandaged his wound, lecturing him about playing with wildlife the entire time.
"You should be old enough to know better," Eva told him sternly.

 ***

"All better?" Nathaniel asked Ian, glancing up from where he'd been preparing the fish for dinner.

"Yeah, it only hurts a little," Ian said, wiggling his hand. "Can I help you lit the fire?"

"Sure, get the kindling," Nathaniel directed him as the ladies took their seats.
Once they were seated, Nathaniel passed around the sticks.  "Grab some fish and get to roasting!" he told them.

"Gross! It looks slimy!" Haley complained.  "I don't want to touch it!"

Ian grinned and slipped two pieces on his roasting stick.  "I get Haley's!"
"I'm just going to eat marshmallows," she said unhappily, sticking a few pieces on her stick.  Of course, it figured that the whole thing would catch on fire!  "MOM!" she said, waving the stick around to try to put the flame out.

"Haley! Don't swing that next to your brother's face!" Nathaniel cautioned her.
"But the fire's not going out..." she said near tears, trailing off as the flame suddenly stopped, leaving behind a charred mess.

"Mmmm... these marshmallows are great!" Ian said, popping three perfectly toasted marshmallows into his mouth.

Haley pouted.

    1. She was certainly not happy about being there! I told her to fish and she sat down and pulled out her game. And the looks on her face were priceless at the campfire. :)
